Project type
Residential Courtyards / Bomässa
Date
May 2001
Location
Malmö
House Architect
Gert Wingårdh
This project transforms three residential gardens into dynamic, evolving biotopes, creating urban ecological spaces that serve as lively courtyards. The entire site is set on a beam structure elevated above a garage, where deliberate, sharp design cuts expose the underlying construction, integrating form with function.
The project is divided into three distinct parts:
The Beach: Constructed with wild plants growing on a foundation of crushed glass and mussel shells, this area evokes the raw, untamed character of a coastal landscape.
The Garden: Featuring beds of reeds and resilient ornamental grasses, this section is highlighted by a large, flowering tree that appears to emerge directly from the garage, blending natural elements with urban architecture.
The Biotron: This area comprises fragmented landscapes marked by discs of moss set between vertical glass panels. A rainwater collection system irrigates these installations, and a hidden lake beneath the wooden deck adds a secret, serene dimension.
Originating from the concept of urban ecological biotopes, this project redefines residential courtyards as vibrant, adaptable living environments. The innovative design has been recognized in several publications and was notably exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2000.
